The Implementation of e-way bill requirement for movement of consignment in GST had to be postponed by the Indian Government after the technical glitches disrupted the trade.
From February 1, an electronic documentation called e-way bill is mandatory for tracking the movement of goods inter-alia for all inter-state movement of goods.
The technical glitches in the GST have left the government with no other option but to look for another day for making the system mandatory for transporters. The e-way bill is mandatory for movement of goods having value above Rs 50,000 between states under the GST regime. The e-way bill is introduced to keep a check on tax evasion.
The transporters were asked to use the e-way bill from 1 February after a 14 day trial by the government however, the transporters complained that they are unable to generate the e-way bills as the e-way portals were down. The transporters further complained that the e-way portal has insecure http connection over https connection.
Finance Ministry has said that they will increase the timeline of trial run period for e-way bill till the technical glitches in GST are fixed.
The GST Network company is developing the base technology for e-way bill system and from the start of the trial run period, it has issued 2.84 lakhs bills.
