The two circulars issued by the JNU for making MPhil a mandatory requirement for students interested in pursuing Phd, the operation of both the circulars  has for now been stayed by the Delhi HC.

The stay has been put in force till 26 February, 2018 by the Justice Indermeet Kaur. The Petition was filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan by Phd student Preeti Umarao and others.

It was stated in the petition that the circulars dated september 21 and 25 issued by the university containing a condition that MPhil degree is required for pursuing Phd has aggrieved the petitioners. It was further stated in the petition that this condition was not laid down by the university before in the admission brochures.

It was further stated by the petitioners that they have already taken admission in the Phd Programme in the JNU in the year June 2016 and if the notification is allowed to continue they will be adversely affected by the same and they have to suffer a huge setback.

In the light of above, the court has asked the university to file a rejoinder to the petition and have put a stay on the impugned notification till February 26, 2018.
