The intention of centre to extend the deadline for the mandatory  linking of aadhaar card with bank accounts and other services from 31 December, 2017 to 31 March, 2018 has been submitted before the Supreme Court by the Attorney General KK Venugopal.

It was submitted by the Attorney General that only the deadline of mandatory linking of aadhaar card with the phone numbers will not be extended that will remain the same as the current deadline which is 6 Feb, 2018. However, in case of linking with bank accounts the deadline will be extended for those who are presently not aadhaar card holders.

Shyam Divan, Senior Advocate representing the petitioners requested that the present aadhaar card holders shall also be given benefit of the extension period of the aadhaar card linking. The matter is being heard by the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Mishra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud.

An plea has been made before the court to take up the case for an interlocutory hearing in the next week for granting an interim stay so that no coercive steps to be taken by the centre in case of failure of linking of the aadhaar with either bank account or mobile number. It was further sought that the matter to be fully disposed by january second or third week.

The court has given a hint of a constitutional hearing of the matter in the next week.
