The newly appointed head of the Congress party’s data analytics department, Praveen Chakravarty, says that they have no connection with Cambridge Analytica and there is no reason for getting puzzled. In an interview, he confronted the questions regarding the security of personal data.
He said the data is not important for the election only, and data cannot make one to win the polls. The duty of analytics department is to use the data for various issues and provide an additional input to the party so that it can understand what the need of the public is. He further said, in a democratic system, nothing is bad when it helps more to understand the voters through technology, data, data science which plays an important role. Any data can be revealed using technology and people does not seem to have a problem regarding that. It is not always that big data means private data, people have to understand the difference between public data and private data.
Praveen explained on the privacy matter that a post on twitter is public, but if a post on Facebook is for friends and the visibility is not to the public, then it cannot be used. If anything crosses this boundary, then it is a breach of privacy. Without the permission of the users, no party can use the personal data, and Congress has never asked any service provider for that. He criticized the role of Cambridge Analytica in US election. He assured that Congress had no such dealing with Cambridge Analytica, but there had been conversation with many Indian, US, UK and other firms for data analytics. All of them are not same, so they cannot be held as culprits.
Moreover, he stated that 2019 election is no more about only arithmetic like the previous ones, neither only data analytics nor arithmetic can make a party win.
